The Tourism & Transport Forum (TTF) welcomes the NSW Government’s announcement that the Renewable Fuel Scheme (the Scheme) will be expanded to include low-carbon liquid fuels (LCLFs), describing the move as an important step toward a more sustainable and competitive visitor economy.
The expansion recognises the role of LCLFs in strengthening fuel security and reducing emissions in sectors that are typically more difficult to decarbonise, such as aviation.
These fuels, including sustainable aviation fuel, renewable diesel, and biodiesel, are expected to support the transition to lower-emissions transport and improve NSW’s attractiveness as a destination for investment.
TTF also welcomes the NSW Government’s commitment to consult with industry later this year and will look to work collaboratively on the next stage of the Scheme’s development.
TTF CEO Margy Osmond said, “This is great news for the tourism industry, and a strong signal that New South Wales is serious about supporting the transition to more sustainable travel.”
“We need to keep Australia competitive as a global destination and, as a long-haul market, sustainability is becoming increasingly important to travellers, event organisers, and investors.”
“When we can meet sustainability expectations, we unlock opportunities for major conferences, packed venues, and thriving local businesses, with the benefits flowing right across the visitor economy.”
Ms Osmond continued, “Not only is Australia a long-haul destination internationally, many of our most iconic tourism experiences also require long-distance domestic travel.
“Sustainable aviation fuel, lower-emissions ground transport, and cleaner cruise operations all need to work together to support a truly sustainable visitor journey.”
Ms Osmond said the NSW announcement also built on recent momentum at the national level.
“This announcement, alongside the Federal Government’s recent commitment in the 2026–27 Budget, shows that governments are recognising the importance of investing in the future of sustainable travel and transport,” she said.
“Sustainable, low-carbon liquid fuels are no longer a ‘nice to have’. They are essential.”
“We look forward to working with the NSW Government and industry stakeholders on the next stage of the Scheme’s development.”
