TOURISM AND TRANSPORT SECTOR WELCOMES MIGRATION SHAKE-UP TO ADDRESS SKILLS SHORTAGE
The Tourism & Transport Forum (TTF) Australia has welcomed the Federal Government’s plans to overhaul the skilled migration framework, to help tackle the skills shortage still hurting tourism, transport and aviation.
TTF CEO Margy Osmond said the findings in the final report from the independent Review of the Migration System released today will help the government simplify the migration system, so tourism, transport and aviation operators can successfully attract the workers they need.
“We’re pleased the government is taking action to address a migration system that is not fit for purpose. For too long, there’s been too much red tape and our sectors have been suffering as a result,” Ms Osmond said.
“We’re hopeful that by simplifying and streamlining the system, tourism, transport and aviation will be able compete globally for the skills they still desperately need.
“While the increase to the temporary skilled migration income threshold (TSMIT) was anticipated, this change will need to be delivered thoughtfully.
“We must ensure our sector can still easily access essential workers we rely on in areas of real shortage but with incomes below the threshold.”
Ms Osmond praised the government for recognising that Australia will be better off by giving skilled migrants an opportunity to stay here.
“Encouraging skilled workers to stay in Australia will benefit tourism, transport and aviation, helping our sectors continue to build a stronger economy,” she said.
“By creating pathways to permanency, the government is helping local operators make Australia a more appealing destination for the highly-skilled workers they need.”
