Senator Janet Rice

Senator Janet Rice is the Australian Greens transport and infrastructure spokesperson. Janet has a passion for zero-carbon transport and infrastructure and its potential to meet our transport needs, with a focus on electric vehicles and associated infrastructure, public transport, active transport and increasing the amount of freight carried by rail.

She chairs the Senate Environment & Communications Committee, is a member of the Senate Regional and Rural Affairs and Transport committee and was a member on the Select Committee on Electric Vehicles.

Prior to becoming a senator in 2014, Janet was a councillor and mayor of Maribyrnong Council in Melbourne’s west, where she positioned the city as a leader in environmental sustainability, pioneered an ambitious carbon-neutral strategy, and increased investment in cycling and walking infrastructure. She was also chair of the Metropolitan Transport Forum in Melbourne, the first coordinator of Bicycle Network’s Ride2Work Day, and worked as a consultant with local and state governments on a range of transport and sustainability initiatives.
