Renzo Piano’s involvement in Barangaroo welcomed

World-renowned architect, Renzo Piano, will design the next stage of residential development at Barangaroo South, in a move welcomed by peak national industry body Tourism & Transport Forum (TTF). Piano’s role designing the exclusive high-rise residential building was announced as part of the newly launched Revised Concept Plan, known as Mod 8.

TTF Chief Executive, Margy Ormond, said Piano would prove an asset to the development, “Barangaroo is one of the most significant urban renewal projects currently underway in Sydney and Piano’s involvement will add an exciting dimension to the project. I am confident that under the guidance of Renzo Piano, the One Sydney Harbor development at Barangaroo South will become a leading example of innovative and creative design.

“Renzo Piano has built some of the most exciting buildings in the world including The Shard in London, the Pompidou Centre in Paris and the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco and of course Aurora Place here in Sydney. With his eye guiding the development, there is no doubt Barangaroo South will become a world class architecturally exciting destination that will provide a new gateway to the Western Harbour precinct.

Mrs Osmond said the Revised Concept Plan cements the vision for Barangaroo as a world class, mixed-use precinct.

“With more than half of the 7.68 ha site dedicated to public space, including an accessible waterfront cove, a new neighbourhood park, and a 100% waterfront foreshore walk, the Revised Concept Plan for Barangaroo South is sure to become a ‘must visit’ destination for visitors and locals alike.

“From a tourism perspective, the site will be anchored by the Crown resort, which will form the heart of the waterfront precinct, and with restaurants, entertainment spaces, public space, and cultural events.

“Developments like this will ensure that we truly capitalise on the investment we are already making in the Western Harbour precinct and provide an important link between the CBD, Darling Harbour and the emerging hi-tech corridor at Pyrmont and Ultimo.

“It will be new developments like these that will help New South Wales reach its Tourism 2020 target of doubling overnight visitor expenditure to $36.6 billion by the end of the decade.”
